Do you have a “Follow Me” car on the road you are on? Or are you the one blazing a new road? Let me explain….
I’ve been flying in airplanes as long as I can remember. My first flight was when I was four; I’ve got a good 2 – 3 million airplane miles I have traveled in my life (“officially” it is 1 million miles with 1 airline) and can still remember when Pan Am was the airline to fly with.
One of my earliest memories airport memories was waiting for my grandparents to arrive in Vienna back in the 70’s and watching the planes come in. Each one would be met by a “Follow Me” car, a car that guided the plane from the runway to the gate.
It’s been a long time since I have seen a “Follow Me” car as most of the time the plane gets to the gate via electronic means. I thought about as I embark on this road taken I realize there is a part of me that longs for a “Follow Me” car in my life!
Throughout history men and women have rallied those around themselves by calling them out to “follow me”. Whether it was William Wallace with a bunch of peasants in Scotland, Jesus of Nazareth with fishermen and tax collectors in Israel or Martin Luke King in a racially divided country, down through the ages men and women have beckoned those around them to follow them.
I’ve had someone like that in my life as well. My friend and mentor Vance Brown, asked me to follow him and his two co-founders into a wild adventure called Cherwell Software. I am so thankful he did, as I have never looked back and enjoyed every step of the journey. It is also the key reason why I am on this road taken.
But I don’t have anyone in my life that right now that has been on this road I am currently on. There are so many unknowns in this season of life in just about every area you can imagine. What if I make a wrong turn? What if I move too slow or too fast? What if I think I am headed in the right direction, but wind up in the wrong place? I long for the “Follow Me” car!
But maybe that is part of what this road taken is about. Maybe it is about learning and exploring this road on my own, without a “Follow Me” car.
